New Programs: Development, Approvals, and Deadlines

Development

Proposal Development

Academic units proposing new programs must complete a Program and Curricular Change form and provide other required documentation, including, as applicable:

  • Financial implications form (including consultation with the Strategic Finance Office)
  • College statement of support
  • Letters of support
  • Syllabi and course creation forms for new courses
  • USask consultation forms (library, ICT, Physical Resource)
  • Catalogue entry

Forms can be found on the Governance Office website.

CGPS Consultation

Academic units are encouraged to reach out to CGPS during any stage of the proposal development. Prior to official submission, CGPS can:

  • Provide and consult on required forms
  • Review the program proposal for alignment with CGPS policy and processes
  • Connect proponents with institutional stakeholders (e.g., Strategic Finance Office, Registrar's Office, etc.)

Approvals and Deadlines

Approval Pathway

  1. Academic unit, including the relevant college faculty council or equivalent (as applicable)
  2. CGPS Graduate Programs Committee
  3. Consultation with the Registrar (completed by CGPS)
  4. Academic Programs Committee of Council
  5. University Council

Deadlines

New programs must be approved through all levels of governance by January 31 each year for inclusion in the University Catalogue. To ensure there is sufficient time time for all processes to be completed by the January 31 deadline, it is strongly recommended that new program proposals be submitted to CGPS by October 15.
