This content is intended for graduate administrators and graduate faculty administering the 75th Anniversary Recruitment Scholarship.
Q. How are the 75th Anniversary Recruitment Scholarship (75th) allocations calculated?
A. Unit allocations are calculated based on the 5-year average of Tri-Agency held grants by PIs and a 3-year average of Tri-Agency scholarships held by students.
Q. How are the Student Support Fund (SSF) allocations calculated?
A. Unit allocations are calculated based on a weighted rolling three-year average of enrollments: PhD (x1.5), master’s-thesis (x1), master’s-project (x0.75), and master’s-course-based (x0.2). We count PhD students in their first four years of program, first two years for master’s.
Q. Does being part of the 75th program mean all PhD students must be paid a minimum of $25,000/year?
A. Yes. All PhD students who begin May 1, 2026, or later must receive at least $25,000/year for 4 years.
Q. Is there a minimum funding requirement for master’s students?
A. No. There is no minimum requirement for master’s students. However, 75th funds can be used to support master’s students.
Q. Can funding be allocated in increments of less than $25,000?
A. Yes. Both PhD and master’s students can be funded at $12,500/year increments. Other increment amounts are not permitted.
Options for awarding CGPS 75th Recruitment scholarships may include:
-
$25,000 to a PhD student paid to the student in year 2 or beyond of their program. For example, if the 75th is deferred for a year as other scholarship funds are in place that meet the minimum funding requirement for a PhD student such as a CGSR-D.
-
$12,500 to a master’s student paid to the student in year 2 or beyond of their program. For example, if the 75th is deferred for a year as other scholarship funds are in place to support the student such as a CGSR-M.
-
$25,000 to a PhD student paid as $12,500 in year 1 and $12,500 in year 2, provided additional funds in years 1-4 bring the total paid to the student to $25,000/year. Additional qualifying funds include TA, RA, SA, other minor scholarships, or grant-funded stipends.
Q. Can one 75th unit ($25,000) be paid to a PhD student over 2 years?
A. Yes. The 75th can be paid to a student in $12,500 increments over two years provided the student receives at least $25,000 per year in total.
Q. What happens if a student originally committed $25,000 from the 75th receives a Tri-Agency scholarship afterwards?
A. Annual allocations must be committed in that fiscal year but not necessarily spent.
If a PhD student who has been awarded a 75th subsequently receives Tri-Agency funding in the first year, the committed 75th scholarship funds can be directed to another incoming student and/or the unit can commit to supporting the student in the later years when the Tri-Agency scholarship ends.
Q. Do students who started before the $25,000 minimum change need to be paid at least $25,000 going forward?
A. Units are encouraged, but not required, to apply this rate to continuing students who were guaranteed less than $25,000 initially.
Q. What happens to residual/unused 75th funds at the end of the fiscal year?
Uncommitted funds cannot be carried forward. Funds from one year can be committed to pay a student in a future year, but they need to be committed, and a plan to use the funds should be in place.
