WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Material Information System)

WHMIS Training

All individuals working with or around hazardous materials must receive training on the Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS). Minimum training is available online through Safety Resources' WHMIS Training Course

It is important that individuals working with or around hazardous materials know: 

  • how to recognize hazardous materials
  • how to identify the hazards associated with these materials
  • how to safely use, handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials

The WHMIS training course provides: 

  • a basic understanding of WHMIS
  • how to recognize classes of hazardous materials
  • available resources in WHMIS
  • general measure to protect workers

Ensure Your WHMIS Training Certificate is Valid

If you are unsure when you are due to renew your WHMIS training, you can look up your training certificate by following these steps: 

  1. Open Training and Resources
  2. Click "login" at the top right hand corner and enter your nsid credentials
  3. Click on your name at the top right hand corner and find "Student Dashboard"
  4. Search for WHMIS in your completed courses
  5. Click to view or download your course certificate
  6. Expiry dates are shown at the bottom of the certificate

If your WHMIS training is expired, about to expire, or if you have not completed the WHMIS course, enroll in the latest version of WHMIS Training and complete all of the course modules. ​​​

Employer and Employee Responsibilities

Every Employer is required to: Every Employee is required to:
  • Ensure hazardous products are properly labeled. WHMIS labels alert the worker to the identity of the product, hazards, and precautionary measures. 
  • Ensure SDSs are available, current, and readily available for all hazardous products being used and stored. SDSs provide detailed hazard and precautionary information. 
  • Educate employees about WHMIS, hazardous materials, and protective measures to work safely with the hazardous products. 
  • Participate in WHMIS training and other health and safety training required for your job. 
  • Use your WHMIS training and adhere to WHMIS requirements. 
  • Follow safe work procedures and rules. 
  • Know where SDSs are located in your workplace and how to use them. 
  • Inform your supervisor about any hazards you see in the workplace.
  • Inform your supervisor of deficiencies such as labels on containers that are no longer readable, damaged, or lost. 
  • Maintain a current chemical inventory.
